01 What the Department Is

A Saturday department of the Royal Academy of Music, teaching at the Academy itself — Marylebone Road, London NW1 5HT. The department's own wording is: “On Saturdays, the Royal Academy of Music transforms into Junior Academy.” No separate building is named.

Four further courses sit in the same department: Primary Academy, for school years five, six and seven; Junior Jazz, for ages 14 to 18; Junior Academy Musical Theatre, for ages 13 to 18; and First String Experience, for young children with no previous experience.

The 2026-27 Saturday year, as published on the course page:

  • Intensive Day: Saturday 12 September 2026, for all Junior Academy, Primary Academy and Junior Jazz students

  • Autumn 2026: Saturday 19 September to Saturday 12 December, 11 weeks; half term 24 and 31 October

09 Bursaries and Government Funding

Bursaries are available each year, awarded in cases of financial need and subject to means-testing.

A full bursary covers basic fees and the core timetable only. Extra individual lessons, such as a second instrument or an extended lesson, are not covered.

With a full bursary there is no termly invoice. With a partial bursary the award is deducted from the termly invoice and the balance is paid when invoiced.

A bursary covers one academic year. A new form is completed each subsequent year. Income is assessed on the previous financial year.

Separated or divorced parents each complete an individual form. A single parent is asked to show that the absent parent has no financial responsibility for the child.

Supporting documents are uploaded electronically: for example a P60, a recent payslip, a self-assessment return or a benefits letter, together with a copy of the child's passport photo page.

The published bursary deadline is Monday 1 June 2026, with decisions emailed in mid-June 2026. These are the dates currently published and relate to the 2026-27 cycle; the 2027-28 bursary deadline is not published.

Junior Academy is supported by the Music and Dance Scheme Access to Excellence programme. Eligibility follows the household income criteria set by the government's Music and Dance Scheme. Students selected for Music and Dance Scheme support complete a more detailed scheme-specific form; the department states that this is not an additional application. Income thresholds and award amounts are not stated on the department's pages.

Named funders and benefactors: The Leverhulme Trust, The Wolfson Foundation, Musicians Benevolent Fund, Susan Lawrence Travel Bursary Fund, Julian Bream Trust Scholarships, Benslow Musical Instrument Loan Scheme, ABRSM, and anonymous benefactors. Junior Academy Musical Theatre is supported by the Signatur Programme and The Mila Charitable Organisation.

10 The Language Condition

No language requirement is stated on any Junior Academy page.
