A Guide to Royal Northern College of Music Undergraduate Admissions

In brief

The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) is in Manchester, and states that it is home to over 900 students from more than sixty countries. The undergraduate degree is a four-year BMus, with a three-year route entering directly into year two.

Three features stand out for applicants based in China. RNCM has the widest mainland China audition coverage of the four — Beijing, Qingdao, Shanghai and Shenzhen, plus Hong Kong. Its four-year tuition cost can be calculated exactly: the 2027/28 cohort pays the same rate in all four years, £122,800 in total, and it is the only one of the four to publish a flat rate. And it has two scholarship routes, one automatic and one by application, with international undergraduates eligible for both.

One requirement is stricter than elsewhere: RNCM is the only one of the four that normally requires music among the A-levels, alongside a separate GCSE requirement.

01 About the College

RNCM is in central Manchester. Its published description is that it is home to over 900 students from more than sixty countries.

On rankings, a news release of 12 March 2025 states that RNCM is ranked fifth in the world for music in the QS World University Rankings, the second consecutive year at that position, and in the top ten globally for performing arts in the same survey.

The proportion and headcount of international students are not published. The international students landing page carries a general description with no figures.

One practical consequence of not being in London: living costs in Manchester are materially lower. The other three are all London institutions. RNCM publishes no figure for this, but over four years it is a substantial variable in a total-cost estimate.

02 Degree Length and Age

The standard route is the four-year BMus (Hons).

A three-year route entering directly into year two is also offered, with a considerably higher entry bar — see section 03.

Minimum age: applicants must be at least 18 on 31 December in the year of entry.

That cut-off is later than RAM's (1 September) and stricter than RCM's (no minimum). For September 2027 entry, an applicant who turns 18 at any point before 31 December 2027 qualifies — so a student who is still 17 at the start of term is eligible.

03 Academic Requirements

Four-year BMus:

  • A-levels: two subjects at grade E or above, normally including music

  • GCSE: three different subjects at grades A*–C / 9–4, or acceptable equivalent

The music requirement is unique among the four. RCM, RAM and Guildhall place no subject restriction. An applicant without A-level music should confirm their position with admissions.

IB and BTEC equivalences are not published for the BMus. The entrance requirements page gives equivalences only for other courses — for example, Popular Music accepts the Rockschool Level 3 Music Practitioner qualification, a BTEC National Diploma in a music-related subject, or an international equivalent, while Inclusive Music Education states that BTECs and international equivalents are assessed individually. IB candidates should confirm directly.

Three-year route, direct entry to year two (a much higher bar):

  • A-levels: at least three different subjects, normally including music, at grades AAB

  • Plus: an HE Level 4 diploma in music performance, such as DipABRSM or ATCL

  • Plus IELTS 7.0 in every component (see section 07)

For comparison, the GRNCM/MusB joint course with the University of Manchester requires AAA at A-level, normally including music.

04 Standard of Playing

The published wording is that applicants should demonstrate a high standard of performance — or composition ability for composers — and potential, of at least ABRSM Grade 8 standard or equivalent.

Note both the "or equivalent" qualifier and the parenthetical alternative for composers. The GRNCM/MusB version of the same sentence omits "or equivalent".

Of the four, only RNCM and RAM publish an explicit standard — RAM's is "distinction at Grade 8", RNCM's is "at least Grade 8 standard". RCM and Guildhall publish none.

05 Overseas Auditions and Discipline Restrictions

Centres and dates for 2027 entry:

  • Beijing — 27 to 28 October 2026

  • Qingdao — 30 October 2026

  • Shanghai — 2 to 3 November 2026

  • Shenzhen — 4 to 5 November 2026

  • Hong Kong — 6 to 7 November 2026

  • New York — 26 to 28 January 2027

Four mainland cities, the widest coverage of the four conservatoires. RCM auditions in Shanghai and Beijing; RAM and Guildhall each audition in Qingdao only.

Disciplines not available at overseas centres: popular music, percussion and composition. The same exclusions apply at both the China/Hong Kong centres and New York. Applicants in those three may instead take an online audition or attend in person in Manchester.

The overseas route requires a pre-screening recording. The published wording is that applicants opting for an overseas audition are required to submit an audition recording for shortlisting before attending in person. This matches RAM's practice and differs from RCM's.

One inconsistency on the page: the body text of the overseas auditions page reads "2027 entry" while a heading on the same page reads "2026 entry". The dates listed — October and November 2026, January 2027 — are consistent with September 2027 entry.

Per-centre deadlines and the overseas recording submission deadline are not published. Only the single UCAS deadline applies (see section 08).

06 The Audition

RNCM states that audition processes vary between courses and instruments, and does not publish a single undergraduate audition format. The duration of in-person auditions is not published on the Your Audition page, the FAQs, or the strings and wind/brass/percussion pages.

Overseas and online applicants go through two stages:

  • Stage one: a recording submitted through Acceptd, including a two-minute spoken introduction; the recording is capped at 15 minutes for strings. Recordings are pre-screened and shortlisted applicants are notified through UCAS Conservatoires.

  • Stage two: a 20-minute live audition by Zoom, at which the applicant performs a new piece lasting no more than five minutes, plus an interview and a quick study.

In-person audition content (strings, wind, brass and percussion): a set piece from a named list, plus a piece of the applicant's own choice contrasting in period and style; an interview; and possibly a quick study. Sight-reading is mentioned only for harp and guitar. Scales are not mentioned.

Accompanist: the applicant's responsibility. The published wording is that an accompanist must be of a suitable standard to support a conservatoire-ready performance.

Composition: no performance audition. Stage one is the submission of three works through Acceptd by Thursday 1 October 2026, with at least one notated score in the portfolio, and recordings where possible. Stage two is an in-person meeting with the Head of School and a composition tutor; the panel reviews extracts for thirty minutes before the interview, and candidates are asked to discuss their background, work and study aims. Interview length is not published.

07 English Language Requirements

  • IELTS Academic (excluding IELTS Online) — Four-year BMus：5.5 in each and every component (CEFR B2) — Direct entry to year two：7.0 in each and every component (CEFR C1)

  • PTE Academic / PTE Academic UKVI — Four-year BMus：59+ — Direct entry to year two：76+

  • Cambridge B2 First — Four-year BMus：162–168 — Direct entry to year two：185–191

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced — Direct entry to year two：185–191

  • Trinity ISE — Four-year BMus：ISE II (B2) Pass — Direct entry to year two：ISE III (C1) Pass

Note that RNCM words its requirement differently from the other three: it specifies a score in each component rather than an overall score plus component minimums. The effect is similar, but the component score governs.

PTE Home is not accepted; tests must be UKVI-approved.

TOEFL, the Duolingo English Test and LanguageCert are not on the accepted list. This differs from the other three, all of which accept TOEFL. Families planning to sit the TOEFL need a separate arrangement for RNCM.

Non-test routes accepted: a passport from a majority English-speaking country; a UK degree or an equivalent qualification taught in English; GCSE or A level obtained in the UK before the age of 18; Scottish equivalents.

Deadline for results: 1 May in the year of entry — 1 May 2027 for September 2027 entry.

08 Deadlines

  • 9 July 2026 — UCAS Conservatoires applications open

  • 1 October 2026, 18:00 UK time — UCAS Conservatoires deadline

  • Thursday 1 October 2026 — composition portfolio deadline

  • November and December 2026 — main audition period

  • Thursday 24 December 2026 — offers distributed

  • 23 September 2027, 18:00 UK time — UCAS final submission date

One date conflict on the site: the international students page states that applications close on 2 October, with no year given, while the how-to-apply page and UCAS both state 1 October 2026. Use 1 October — it is corroborated by UCAS and appears on the more recently updated page.

The 24 December offer date is worth noting: RNCM publishes a firmer decision date than the other three, which allows families to plan the following steps around it.

09 Application Fees

  • UCAS Conservatoires application fee: £34.50 for the 2027 cycle, covering up to six choices

  • RNCM assessment (audition) fee, charged separately: £80 single principal study, £120 joint principal study

Total for a single principal study: £114.50.

Across the four, for a single principal study including any UCAS fee: RCM £149.50, RAM £134.50, Guildhall £129 (no UCAS fee, as it does not use the system), RNCM £114.50. RNCM is the lowest.

10 Tuition Fees

A student entering in September 2027 falls under the 2027/28 cohort schedule:

  • Years 1 to 4 — International：£30,700 per year — Home：£10,050 per year

Four-year total: £122,800.

This is the only one of the four for which a four-year total can be stated directly. RNCM publishes a flat rate across all four years for the 2027/28 cohort, with neither an increase nor a taper. RCM states that fees rise 2% to 7% annually; RAM states that fees are subject to an annual increase without giving a figure; Guildhall has not yet published its 2027/28 schedule.

A figure that is easily misapplied: the 2026/27 cohort table does taper — £29,950 in years one and two, £29,650 in year three, £28,100 in year four. That taper does not apply to students entering in 2027. The tapered figures circulate widely in agency material and belong to the earlier cohort.

Deposit (payment fact only): 25% of first-year tuition fees. On the 2027/28 rate of £30,700 that is £7,675 (a conversion from the published percentage, not a figure RNCM states). The College states that this is payable before it processes an applicant's pre-arrival documentation. Refund terms and instalment arrangements for the deposit are not published.

All of the above is tuition only, excluding living costs. Manchester living costs are lower than London's, and over four years the difference is a material variable in total cost.

11 Scholarships

RNCM has two routes, different in kind, and they are easily conflated.

Entrance Scholarships (merit)

No separate application; all applicants are automatically considered. The published wording is that there is no separate application process and all applicants are automatically considered, assessed on outstanding ability and potential at audition.

This matches the position at RCM and RAM.

RNCM Bursaries (need and merit)

A separate application is required, through the Bursary Application Form. The published wording is that a limited number of RNCM Bursaries are available for international and postgraduate students, allocated on the basis of need and merit.

How they are paid: a bursary is deducted from tuition fees, leaving a reduced net balance to pay.

The bursary application deadline is not published.

Eligibility for international undergraduates

Both routes are open — entrance scholarships automatically to all applicants, and bursaries explicitly to international and postgraduate students.

The headline total

RNCM states that it distributes over £3 million to RNCM students each year through a suite of financial support packages. That figure covers all students at all levels and all fee statuses; it is not an international-undergraduate allocation, and no breakdown is published.

Renewal

The published wording is that, unless otherwise specified, scholarships are for the first year of study only, and continuing awards are renewed only if the studentship remains in good standing. This matters for a four-year budget: a first-year award cannot simply be multiplied by four.

Support not open to students from China

  • Undergraduate UK & EU Access Bursary — up to £1,800 per year, for households with income under £60,000, income-assessed, and restricted to UK and EU undergraduates.

  • Other UK and EU undergraduate support is likewise allocated by household income.

  • GREAT Scholarships 2026 — restricted to applicants from India and Thailand; applicants from China are not eligible.

Other named awards listed include ENGAGE, Humanitarian Support, Cumbrian Awards, IAD Scholarships, Principal's Circle, the Williams-Howard Prize, the Lucy Hale Award, Artist of the Year and the Creative Innovators' Award.

12 Three Commonly Misread Requirements

1. A-levels normally have to include music.

RNCM is the only one of the four with this requirement. The other three set no subject restriction, asking only for two A-levels at the minimum grade. An applicant without A-level music should confirm their position with admissions rather than assume the other three schools' standard applies.

2. The tapered fee schedule does not apply to 2027 entrants.

"£29,650 in year three, £28,100 in year four" belongs to the 2026/27 cohort table. The 2027/28 cohort pays a flat £30,700 across all four years. Quoting the older table understates the four-year total by roughly £5,000.

3. Scholarships are, in principle, first-year awards.

The published position is that unless otherwise specified a scholarship covers the first year only, with renewal conditional on good standing. Projecting a first-year award across four years understates the total cost.

13 Points to Confirm Before Applying

  1. Whether the A-levels include music, and if not, written confirmation from admissions on the individual case.

  2. Whether the discipline is available at overseas centres (popular music, percussion and composition are not), working the timetable back from the pre-screening recording.

  3. Which English test to sit: RNCM does not accept TOEFL or Duolingo, only IELTS, PTE, Cambridge and Trinity. The deadline is 1 May 2027.

  4. A four-year tuition figure of £122,800, plus Manchester living costs, with scholarships counted for the first year only.
