Chinese parents fill the summer with camps on the assumption that a busy child is not a phone-addicted child. Dr Xiaoyun Peng reports what she saw at the airport: an entire touring group of children heads-down on games, with no conversation and no reading. She reads Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation against her own family, one son who grew up with violin, craft and neighbourhood play and did not become phone-dependent, and one daughter twelve years younger growing up in a saturated environment. She sets out Haidt's data on rising self-harm and suicide rates and his account of social media's comparison culture, then argues that Chinese exam pressure makes the problem worse: phone time becomes the only unsupervised time a child has. Her conclusion reframes parental ambition around reaching adulthood without an anxiety disorder.
