In September 2024 the photographer Stephen Shore ended a lecture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing early, telling an audience that had spent it on their phones that they could not concentrate on the very subject he had come to discuss. Dr Xiaoyun Peng, who taught a university elective on the philosophy of love in Shanghai, uses the incident to describe what she calls a new form of poverty. She reports the metric Chinese universities use when inspecting teaching, the heads-up rate, and the pressure it puts on lecturers to become comedians. She cites evidence that rural Chinese children own smartphones at higher rates than urban children and use them with less supervision, and argues that attention is stratifying along economic lines. The essay links flow to productivity and predicts occupational sorting by sustained attention.
