01 About the Conservatoire

Leeds Conservatoire is at 3 Quarry Hill, Leeds. It opened in 1965 as Leeds Music Centre, was later Leeds College of Music (the year of that name is given as 1972 on one page and 1997 on another), and was renamed Leeds Conservatoire in 2020. It states that it has over 1,600 students, including roughly 140 international students from around 35 countries.

Its music areas are classical, jazz, popular, folk, roots and blues, music production and music business, alongside drama. Degrees are validated by the University of Hull, and the Conservatoire states that it plans to apply for degree awarding powers.

02 The Degree

The BA (Hons) Classical Music is full time and starts on 14 September 2027.

  • Three-year BA — UCAS code 305F.

  • Four-year BA with Foundation Year — UCAS code W30F, for applicants who do not meet the standard academic or musical requirements.

The 2027 audition guide covers instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, repetiteurs and piano accompanists, and conductors. The degree is a BA rather than a BMus.

The international entry requirements page states that students must be at least 18 at the beginning of their studies, giving the date for 2026 entry; the UK entry requirements page gives the 2027 date only under BA Voice (Friday 1 October 2027). The classical course page does not state a minimum age.

03 How to Apply

Undergraduate classical and jazz courses apply through UCAS Conservatoires, where the institution code is L31; other undergraduate music courses apply through UCAS Undergraduate under code L30. The UCAS deadline for 2027-entry music courses was 1 October 2026, 18:00 UK time, described as the equal consideration deadline; the final UCAS date for 2027-entry conservatoire applications is 23 September 2027. The Conservatoire advises international applicants to apply by 30 May 2027. Its own late-application policy for 2027 entry is not published.

The UCAS Conservatoires fee for 2027 entry is £34.50 for up to six choices. The Conservatoire states that audition fees are no longer charged for any undergraduate or postgraduate course. The personal statement is up to 4,000 characters, and a reference is required from someone other than family or friends. After applying, applicants use Acceptd to book an in-person audition or upload materials.

04 Auditions

Performers and composers choose an in-person audition day in Leeds or an online submission; conductors and repetiteurs submit online only. In-person auditions are a thirty-minute warm-up followed by a thirty-minute audition, in the October or December audition weeks; the exact dates are not published. Auditions and interviews may be recorded for assessment. The international audition period is October to April, and the Conservatoire states that most international applicants submit materials online.

  • In person, performers — two contrasting pieces at Grade 8 standard (Grade 6 for the Foundation Year), at least one with piano accompaniment unless the instrument is piano, guitar, harp or percussion; sight-reading; scales or technical exercises; a short interview.

  • In person, composers — at least two original compositions, approximately ten minutes of music, and a discussion of influences.

  • Online, instrumentalists — two contrasting performance videos; a theory video naming three features of one piece; a short interview video. Vocalists also record a spoken English text of one to two minutes.

  • Online, composers, repetiteurs and conductors — a portfolio of two or three scores with recordings or videos; a theory video; an interview video.

05 Auditions in China

The Conservatoire plans in-country auditions in the USA and China for 2027 entry. Under the heading ‘In Country Auditions (China) 2027 entry’, it lists Guangzhou on 24–25 October, Shanghai on 31 October–1 November and Beijing on 8 November, without printing the year beside the dates and without venues. Registration is by online form; a UCAS or online application must be made before the audition, and applications submitted after 22 October are not accepted. Dates for music auditions in the USA are not published.

06 Academic Requirements

The three-year BA requires 96 UCAS Tariff points from Level 3 study, normally including A level Music or a music-related BTEC Extended Diploma; the international equivalent is given as A level CCC. The Foundation Year requires 64 points. Both routes require three GCSEs including English Language at grade C/4 or above, or an international equivalent.

Performers are expected at Grade 8 standard (ABRSM, LCM, Trinity or RockSchool) and composers at Grade 6; the Foundation Year asks for Grade 6. Applied music theory is assessed at audition. Grade 8 performance carries UCAS points: 30 for Distinction, 24 for Merit and 18 for Pass.

07 English Language Requirement

IELTS Academic, or IELTS Academic for UKVI, 6.0 overall with no sub-test below 5.5. Other tests: PTE Academic 60 (no sub-test below 59), Cambridge C1 Advanced 169 (162), LanguageCert Academic 65 (60) and TOEFL 4.5 (4.0). Results are valid for two years, except C1 Advanced; home-edition tests are not accepted. Pre-sessional English courses of six weeks (from IELTS 5.5) and twelve weeks (from IELTS 5.0) are offered.
