Mock Audition and Written Report
An online mock audition for young musicians preparing to apply to UK specialist music schools, conservatoire junior departments and conservatoires. The session follows the audition format that the target institution publishes, and the family receives a written report within five working days.
Who it is for
- Students preparing for entry to the Yehudi Menuhin School, the Purcell School, Chetham’s School of Music or Wells Cathedral School.
- Students applying to conservatoire junior departments: RCM Junior Department, Royal Academy of Music Junior Academy, Junior Guildhall, Junior Trinity, Junior RNCM, Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and RCS Junior Conservatoire.
- Students preparing undergraduate auditions at UK conservatoires, including the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School and the Royal Northern College of Music.
- Families deciding which institutions to apply to, and in which entry year.
How the session works
- The session is held online, by live video call.
- The panel is two professional musicians.
- The session follows the published audition format of the institutions the family names: prepared pieces and, where the institution lists them, scales, sight-reading, aural tests and a conversation with the student.
- It lasts 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the format being modelled.
- The session is recorded only with a parent’s written consent. Recordings are used to write the report and are deleted 30 days after the report is delivered.
The written report
The report is delivered within five working days of the session. It covers:
- Performance: technique, sound, rhythm, musical understanding and presentation.
- Each element of the published audition format, such as sight-reading, scales, aural tests and the interview, where the institution includes them.
- The current playing set against what each named institution publishes about its entry process. Where an institution publishes an indicative standard, such as the Purcell School’s guide grades by age and instrument, the report refers to it.
- Repertoire for the audition.
- A preparation plan for the following eight to twelve weeks.
- A suggested entry year and combination of institutions to consider.
What the report is not
The report is not a prediction of an admissions decision. Each institution makes its own decisions, and only its admissions office can confirm them.
Inchwise is not affiliated with any institution named on this page. Each mock audition is modelled on what the institution publishes about its own audition.
Booking
Fees are given on enquiry. To arrange a mock audition, write to info@inchwise.co.uk with the student’s age, instrument, most recent grade or current repertoire, and the institutions under consideration.
