A Guide to Royal College of Music Undergraduate Admissions

In brief

The Royal College of Music (RCM) has just over 900 students from more than sixty countries. The undergraduate degree is a four-year BMus.

Three features are relevant to applicants based in China: RCM holds live auditions in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong; scholarships are assessed automatically at audition, with no separate application; and the undergraduate English requirement is IELTS 5.5.

Two of those features are in direct conflict, and this is the point to settle first: the only full scholarship open to an international undergraduate — the ABRSM award — requires the applicant to audition in London during the main audition period. An applicant who auditions at an overseas centre is not eligible for it.

A second restriction is easily missed: composition, composition for screen, conducting, organ, percussion and historical instruments are not available at any overseas audition centre. Applicants in those disciplines must audition in London or by recording.

International tuition for 2027/28 is £32,600 per year.

01 About the College

RCM is in South Kensington, London, adjacent to the Royal Albert Hall. It has just over 900 students from more than sixty countries across undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes.

Nine faculties take undergraduates: brass, composition, conducting, historical performance, keyboard, strings, timpani and percussion, vocal and opera, and woodwind. Jazz is not available as an undergraduate principal study; it exists only as a second study.

On rankings, the College's own news release of 26 March 2026 states that RCM is ranked first in the UK and Europe and second in the world for music and performing arts in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, and first in the UK for performing arts for an eleventh consecutive year. Its international pages still carry an earlier claim of first in the world for 2022 to 2025; that refers to previous editions. The 2026 position is second globally, and materials prepared for 2026–27 should use it.

The ranking is weighted principally towards academic and employer reputation, and so reflects sector opinion. RCM does not publish graduate employment data.

Conservatoires operate at small scale. Those 900 students are spread across nine faculties, with annual intakes per faculty in the single figures to the low teens. Places depend on each faculty's teaching capacity and ensemble requirements, both of which vary year to year, so applicants of comparable standard may receive different outcomes in different cycles.

02 Degree Length and Age

The degree is the BMus (Hons), four years full-time, UCAS course code 300F.

RCM sets no minimum age for undergraduate entry. Its Policy on HE Students Aged 16 or 17 (updated June 2025) states that there is no minimum age for admission to higher education in the UK, that students under 18 are classed as children under UK law and are subject to additional safeguarding arrangements, and that applicants below 18 may exceptionally be admitted where they meet the standard entry requirements and demonstrate the required emotional and intellectual maturity.

This appears only in the policy document, not on the applicant-facing pages. For comparison, the Royal Academy of Music requires applicants to be 18 by 1 September of the year of entry, and the Royal Northern College of Music by 31 December of that year — neither admits undergraduates below that age. Of the four conservatoires, RCM is the only one with a published route for a younger applicant.

03 Academic Requirements

Two A-levels at grade E or above; or one A-level at grade E or above plus two AS-levels at grades D and E or above.

Other accepted qualifications: three Scottish Highers at grade D or above; Cambridge Pre-U at P3 or above in at least two subjects; BTEC Level 3 National Diploma; International Baccalaureate Diploma at 24 points; Welsh Baccalaureate; RSL Level 3 Diploma for Music Practitioners; RSL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Music Industries.

The threshold is well below that of UK universities generally and functions as an eligibility requirement rather than a competitive criterion. RCM states that all offers are made on audition performance, and for composition on portfolio and interview. Academic results are not weighed further once the minimum is met.

One practical caution: RCM's international equivalency document is titled "List of international qualifications for BMus updated 2018" and is eight years old. Applicants holding non-UK qualifications should confirm their position with admissions rather than rely on it.

04 Standard of Playing

RCM publishes no quantified performance standard, and no benchmark equivalent to the Royal Academy's "distinction at Grade 8".

The published position is that all offers are made on audition performance; composition offers on portfolio and interview.

Graded examination certificates evidence technical attainment but do not themselves form the basis of an offer. The audition assesses musical presentation, musicianship, and suitability for the teaching offered within the relevant faculty.

05 Overseas Audition Centres and Discipline Restrictions

RCM holds live auditions in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The full list of overseas centres is Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, New York and Toronto.

Dates for 2027 entry (RCM words these as expected, not confirmed):

  • Shanghai, Steinway Shanghai — 30–31 October 2026

  • Beijing, Steinway Hall — 3–4 November 2026

  • Sydney — 3–4 November 2026

  • Seoul — 6 November 2026

  • Tokyo — 9 November 2026 (venue to be confirmed)

  • Singapore, NAFA — 10 January 2027

  • Hong Kong, Cheng Wai Piano Institute — 13 January 2027

  • Bangkok, Mahidol University — 18 January 2027

  • New York and Toronto — dates not published; RCM states they are being confirmed

Disciplines not available at any overseas centre: composition, composition for screen, conducting, organ, percussion instruments, historical instruments.

Applicants in those six must audition in London or by recording. Harpsichord and fortepiano fall within historical instruments.

One conflict on RCM's own site. Its China and Hong Kong country pages list audition requirements for composition, historical performance and percussion without noting any restriction, while the central audition-locations page excludes those disciplines from all overseas centres. The central page governs. Applicants in those disciplines should obtain written confirmation from admissions before booking travel.

A recorded audition route is available to applicants unable to attend in person.

06 The Audition

Performance auditions run approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Repertoire requirements are set by faculty and published on each faculty's audition requirements page.

Composition follows a different process: applicants submit a portfolio, and those shortlisted are invited to interview, held in London or online. The portfolio deadline is the same as the application deadline.

07 English Language Requirements

IELTS (Academic): 5.5 overall, with 5.5 in each of the four components (CEFR B2).

Other accepted qualifications for undergraduate entry:

  • Pearson PTE Academic: 59 overall, 59 in each component

  • Cambridge B2 First: 160–172 overall, no component below 160

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: 160–179 overall, no component below 160

  • LanguageCert Academic: 60 or above in each of the four components

  • TOEFL iBT: 4.0 overall and 4.0 in each component under the new scale (tests taken before 21 January 2026 under the previous scale: 72 overall, with Reading 18, Listening 17, Speaking 20, Writing 17)

  • Trinity ISE II: pass in all four components

  • Skills for English B2: pass in all four components

UK universities generally require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate entry; the conservatoire requirement is 5.5. An applicant whose English falls short of the university threshold remains eligible for conservatoire undergraduate entry if the musical requirements are met.

The requirement rises sharply at postgraduate level within the same institution: RCM master's and doctoral programmes require IELTS 7.0 overall, with 5.5 in each component. Families planning to continue to postgraduate study in the UK should factor that gap into their timeline.

08 Deadlines

Deadlines fall into three groups, according to audition format and location:

  • 1 October 2026, 18:00 UK time — the main deadline for most applicants, and for the Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo and Sydney centres. The composition portfolio deadline is the same date.

  • 26 October 2026 — performance video submission, for applicants in the 1 October group.

  • 1 November 2026 — application and pre-screening video for the Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, New York and Toronto centres.

The main London audition period runs through November and December 2026.

The UCAS Conservatoires final submission date for 2027 entry is 23 September 2027. That is a late route, subject to availability, and not a standard application path.

RCM states that late applications may be considered on enquiry to admissions@rcm.ac.uk. This is handled case by case.

09 Application Fees

  • UCAS Conservatoires application fee: £34.50 for the 2027 cycle, covering up to six conservatoire choices

  • RCM single principal study (all performance and composition courses): £115

  • Joint principal study: £165 — available to BMus instrumentalists and composers only, not to singers

These fees are payable on submission and are not contingent on the outcome. RCM operates an audition fee waiver for UK applicants in financial hardship only.

Note that the UCAS Conservatoires FAQ page still displays £28.95, the 2026-entry figure. That page is out of date; £34.50 is the 2027 figure.

10 Tuition Fees

A student entering in September 2027 begins in academic year 2027/28:

  • International BMus, full-time: £32,600 per year

  • Home rate: £10,050 per year

  • International part-time: £23,750 per year

For comparison, the 2026/27 international rate is £31,300.

Four years cannot be estimated by multiplying the first year by four. RCM states that annual fee increases are normally between 2% and 7% and are applied to students in all years of study, including continuing students. On that basis, four years of tuition comes to approximately £134,000 to £145,000 (an estimate derived here from RCM's published range of increases, not a figure RCM publishes).

The 2026/27 fee schedule showed a £30,440 fourth-year continuing rate, footnoted as applying to international BMus students continuing to Year 4 in 2026/27 — an earlier cohort. The 2027/28 schedule carries no such figure, and 2027 entrants do not benefit from it.

All of the above is tuition only, excluding living costs. London sits in the highest band for living costs in the UK and should be budgeted separately.

One optional cost is published: additional one-to-one tuition, 28 half-hour lessons per year, at £1,489 per year in 2026/27.

11 Scholarships

Every applicant for a performance or composition course beginning in 2026 or 2027 is automatically considered for a scholarship, whether they audition in person or submit a video audition. There is no separate application.

This differs from Guildhall, where scholarship applications are made only after an offer has been received and accepted. At RCM the audition determines both the offer and the level of funding.

Notification: applicants auditioning in November and December are informed before the end of the year; others within two weeks of receiving an offer. For international students, awards are deducted directly from tuition fees.

The two categories open to international undergraduates

General merit scholarships. Assessed automatically; amounts vary by case and are not published as a range.

The ABRSM International Scholarship. One of two awards for international students — one undergraduate, one postgraduate. The undergraduate award covers full tuition plus a £5,000 per year stipend for living costs.

The location condition on the ABRSM award

RCM attaches a further condition to the ABRSM scholarships: to be considered, applicants must audition in London during the main audition period, November to December.

The consequence is direct: an applicant auditioning in Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong is not eligible for the ABRSM scholarship.

This is the calculation worth making before anything else is booked. What an overseas centre saves is one return airfare and the cost of an accompanying adult. What it forgoes is the only award open to an international undergraduate that covers full tuition plus living costs — worth roughly £37,600 a year. There is one undergraduate place a year, so the probability of winning it is low in any case; but whether that probability is zero depends on where the applicant auditions.

Awards not open to students from China

The two most prominent awards on RCM's funding pages both require Home fee status, for which students from China do not qualify:

  • The undergraduate bursary — £3,000 per year where household income is £25,000 or below; £1,500 per year where it is £25,001 to £35,000. These are two fixed bands, not a range.

  • The scholarship for Black, Asian and ethnically diverse students — full fees for each year of the course, with an explicit Home fee status requirement.

Claims that "RCM offers full scholarships" usually refer to the second of these, which is not available to international students.

The College's statements that almost half of students receive some form of support, and that its strongest students study fee-free, are institution-wide figures, not disaggregated by fee status or level of study.

12 Three Commonly Misread Requirements

1. There is more than one deadline, and the centre chosen is tied to scholarship eligibility.

1 October applies to most disciplines and to the Shanghai and Beijing centres; Hong Kong closes on 1 November; recorded auditions close on 26 October. Beyond the date, the choice of centre also determines whether the applicant can be considered for the ABRSM scholarship.

2. Graded examinations do not substitute for academic qualifications.

Graded exams evidence performance standard. The academic requirement must still be met by a formal qualification — two A-levels or 24 IB points. Guildhall states explicitly that graded music and drama examinations are not accepted as equivalent qualifications; RCM does not make the same statement, but academic and musical requirements are assessed independently.

3. Overseas centres are not open to every discipline.

Composition, composition for screen, conducting, organ, percussion and historical instruments are excluded from all overseas centres. RCM's China and Hong Kong pages publish repertoire requirements for several of these without noting the restriction. The central audition-locations page governs; confirm in writing before arranging travel.

13 Points to Confirm Before Applying

  1. Whether the discipline is available at overseas centres. If it is one of the six excluded, plan for London or a recorded audition from the outset.

  2. London or an overseas centre. This decides both the deadline and ABRSM eligibility, and should be settled before anything else.

  3. The audition repertoire requirements for the relevant faculty. These are published by faculty on the RCM website.

  4. A four-year tuition estimate starting at £32,600 and rising 2% to 7% annually, with London living costs estimated separately.
