01 About the Conservatoire

Trinity Laban was formed in 2005 by a merger between Trinity College of Music and the Laban Centre in Deptford. Trinity College of Music was founded in 1872. The music faculty is at King Charles Court, Old Royal Naval College, London SE10. Trinity Laban has held taught degree awarding powers since February 2016.

The Conservatoire states that one third of its students come from outside the UK, from 60 countries. A total student number is not published on the main site. The music departments are Composition, Jazz, Keyboard, Music Education, Popular Music, Strings, Vocal Studies, and Wind, Brass and Percussion.

02 The Degree

The BMus (Hons) Music Composition / Performance / Jazz is four years, full time. For 2027 entry, Welcome Week runs from 13 to 17 September 2027. The UCAS course codes are 300F for Performance or Composition and 310F for Jazz. The course page states that the course will be revalidated in 2026/27 and some details may change.

A Performer/Composer pathway is available in Year 3. Advanced entry into Year 2 or 3 is possible through Recognition of Prior Learning after a standard audition; there are no transfers into Year 4.

The BMus (Hons) Music with Integrated Foundation Year will not recruit new students from September 2027. A separate BA (Hons) Music Performance and Industry is also offered.

A minimum age is not stated on the BMus course page. The applicant terms and conditions dated September 2026, which apply to 2026 entry, state that students should be at least 17 by registration and that under-18s at enrolment need a parent or guardian consent form.

03 How to Apply

Applications are made through UCAS Conservatoires, where the Trinity Laban code is T75. A direct application route is not published. Applications for 2027 entry opened on 10 July 2026.

  • On-time deadline: 1 October 2026, 18:00 UK time, for all classical disciplines, Jazz and Composition.

  • Spring deadline: 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time, for classical disciplines and Composition. Jazz is not listed.

Late applications will be considered. Trinity Laban states that most places are awarded in the main audition session from November to December, that late applicants are offered an audition only if places remain in their principal study, and that late audition availability cannot be confirmed until late February. No additional fee is charged for late applications.

The UCAS Conservatoires fee for 2027 entry is £34.50, for up to six choices. The Trinity Laban audition fee for 2027 entry is £98, non-refundable; bassoon applicants audition free of charge. Audition fee waivers apply to UK-resident applicants on low incomes; international applicants are not eligible for waivers.

04 Auditions in London and by Recording

All live auditions are held in London at King Charles Court. Applicants may instead submit a recorded audition through the Embark platform. Recordings are not considered until a UCAS Conservatoires application has been submitted. On the UCAS form, applicants choose ‘institution’ for an in-person audition or ‘recording/online’ for a recorded audition.

  • Classical percussion: 10 November 2026.

  • Brass, keyboard, percussion, strings, voice and wind: 16 to 27 November 2026.

  • Jazz: 30 November to 18 December 2026.

  • Composition interviews, online or in person: mid-November to mid-December 2026.

  • Recorded auditions for the winter session: deadline 23 October 2026, 18:00 UK time.

Recordings begin with a spoken introduction in English of no more than three minutes; audio-only files are not accepted. For woodwind and brass, the requirements are the same for in-person and recorded formats. Pre-screening and a list of disciplines that must audition in person are not published.

05 Auditions in China

Trinity Laban lists China music auditions for 2027:

  • Beijing — 1 November 2026, China Conservatory of Music.

  • Shanghai — 8 November 2026, Shanghai Lezhi Art Centre, Pudong.

The listing does not state whether these cover undergraduate or postgraduate programmes; booking is through a form for each city. Applicants are not required to send English test results for the audition.

06 What the Audition Includes

All auditions include a short discussion with the panel, and the BMus audition ends with a short interview.

  • Strings — two contrasting pieces, no longer than 15 minutes in total.

  • Piano — two or three contrasting pieces, up to 15 minutes, one from memory.

  • Woodwind and brass — two contrasting works, up to 15 minutes.

  • Voice — two or three contrasting pieces; no time limit is stated.

  • Jazz — two pieces, either two standards or one standard and an original; a band is provided and backing tracks are not permitted.

  • Composition — a portfolio of three to six compositions on Embark, a two- to three-minute performance video, then an interview.

07 Academic Requirements

The course page asks for Grade 8 standard in the principal study, three GCSEs including English Language at grade C or above, and two A level passes, one normally in Music; equivalents and prior experience may be considered. The UCAS listing gives A level EE, Scottish Highers DDDDD, Access to HE Pass and BTEC PPP, plus an audition. UCAS Tariff points are not published.

08 English Language Requirement

The course page states IELTS Academic with a minimum of 5.5 in all four areas; General Training is not accepted. The course page gives Cambridge B2 First at a minimum of 160 in all four areas, while the English requirements page gives 162. Other tests on that page are PTE Academic 59, LanguageCert Academic 60 and TOEFL iBT (not Home Edition). Tests must be taken within two years of the programme start date.

09 Tuition Fees

  • 2026/27: home £9,790; international £27,100.

  • 2027/28: home £10,050; international £28,100.

These are fees for one academic year. International fees are subject to annual inflationary increases based on RPI-X; home fees follow the UK Government fee cap. The UCAS listing shows fees as to be confirmed.

10 Scholarships and Bursaries

Every student who auditions is considered for scholarships automatically. Awards are based on performance ability shown at audition, and most are fee reductions. Applicants are invited to apply for financial support as part of their offer; the deadline shown is for the 2026 cycle (20 April 2026), and the 2027 deadline is not published.

Named awards open to undergraduates include the Alfred and Therese Kitchin award (piano), the Gladys Bratton award, the Violet Wright award (violin), the Archer award (jazz) and a Trinity College London award; amounts are not published. None of the BMus-eligible awards listed is restricted to UK students, and the international finance page states that scholarships and bursaries support international applicants.
